Telepresence and Holography / Holograms - November 2008
Editor’s viewpoint on their differences, likenesses and future...
We all just recently viewed an historic CNN holographic interview on an historic Election Night. CNN stated this type of imaging has never been done before on National TV and I believe that. I haven’t seen anything like it. The live interview caught me by surprise and sure had the “wow” factor attached to it didn’t it? Here’s a link to the actual interview.
CNN Hologram Video
The question now has to be asked. Is it Telepresence?
I’m no expert on the subject but I’m going to throw my hat into the ring, go out on a limb and say yes, I believe it is. Although I know many video conferencing purists are rolling their eyes and grabbing their guns right about now with my statement.
While I do know that Telepresence still hasn’t been universally defined (Houston, we have a problem), here’s how I see it…. Broken down to its simplest form - “tele” (through electronic means) and “presence” (present). This is how I’m justifying my opinion by lumping holography and Telepresence together. Just as Telepresence is surely an offshoot of video conferencing, holographic imaging (like we viewed on CNN) surely has to be considered an offshoot of Telepresence. The interviewer was “telepresent” from Chicago and beamed into the CNN Election Headquarters. She was most assuredly - “telepresent”. There was negligible latency, the imaging was fantastic and both interviewers were rehearsed on what they would say. I’ve just recently read that CNN actually “downgraded” the experience to make it “movie” quality and not as good as it could have been. Maybe they thought us mere mortals would be shocked if they showed their complete hand. I have a feeling it was so big to them, they didn’t want it to get upstaged by the historic election. I’m willing to bet we’ll see the “true” power of this technology in the upcoming weeks and months when they can put the pedal to the medal and show it off without having it sidetracked.
What an amazing time for this technology (all differences and opinions aside). Telepresence Doctors, nurses, teachers, schools and healthcare (healthpresence) will benefit from the recent gains in this state-of-the-art industry whether holograms, Telepresence or holography. Airlines also have to see the threat to a portion of their business travel. Hell, who wants go through security and fly to Miami for a two-hour conference when you can look them in the eye via Telepresence?
Beam me up Scotty! Simply amazing…!

Niagara Falls, Ontario (PRWEB) May 18, 2008 -- Telephone Magic Inc., an early Internet pioneer through its US and International website, TelephoneMagic.com, is now in its 20th year of serving its clients with wholesale-direct Nortel Norstar and Meridian phone systems, phones, expansion modules and system cards. The company has also served all levels of government, fortune 500 and small to medium businesses with a wide variety of business headsets, conference units, and telecom accessories such as on-hold messages, phone line recorders, tools, and cable.
In late 2007, Telephone Magic unveiled its exclusive Canadian website, http://www.TelephoneMagic.ca, to an overwhelming positive response. Business clients in Canada who had traditionally bought through the company's original site now have their own "home" site to make their Norstar and Meridian phone equipment purchased at wholesale-direct prices.
Canada is the original home or Nortel and their Norstar and Meridian phone system platforms. As such Nortel has traditionally enjoyed a dominating market share in this country. Nortel Norstar business phone systems have enjoyed this market share since the early 1980's with the introduction of their key-based Meridian Norstar platform. This was later replaced with the ISC line, which allowed backward compatibility for the original Meridian Norstar phones. Subsequently, Nortel released the BCM series of business phone systems, which feature VoIP capability and an "all in the box" feature set that is activated by purchasing licenses.
Large business in Canada have long relied on the Meridian 1 PBX for their communication requirements. Meridian 3900 series phones replaced the Meridian 2000 series sets for the Meridian 1 platform but the series 2000 phones remain very popular and Telephone Magic specializes in wholesale purchases of both series of phone sets.
Telephone Magic clients can now purchase Nortel Norstar phone sets at http://www.telephonemagic.ca/norstar-phones.shtml and the company has further enhanced it's web experience with a completely revamped and extensive Norstar phone headset section at http://www.telephonemagic.ca/norstar-phone-headsets.shtml - to enhance their norstar phone experience.
Telephone Magic has recently further expanded to lead the way in Canada with the Avaya IP Office VoIP platform. Canadian and US businesses can purchase the Avaya IP Office systems, expansion modules/cards and software features through the exclusive "Get a Quote!" system on all of the websites. Adding Avaya IP Office phones from the numerous Avaya phone series is as easy as clicking http://www.telephonemagic.com/avaya-ip-office/avaya-ip-office-phones.htm - this includes corded digital, VoIP, analog, and wireless Avaya phone models.
Telephone Magic also continues to be a leading on-line wholesale distributor of hotel phones worldwide through it's hotel/motel website, HOTELtele.com, which has been actively serving the direct telecom needs of the hospitality industry for over twelve years. Hotels can get up to the minute wholesale room phone pricing at http://www.hoteltele.com/hotel-phones.shtml.
The latest on-line strategic developments undertaken by Telephone Magic Inc. are meant to further strengthen the company's leading position on the Internet as a direct source for information and business phone equipment at wholesale-direct prices. Further website improvements are planned as 2008 continues to enhance the website visitor experience.
