Telepresence and Holography / Holograms - November 2008

Editor’s viewpoint on their differences, likenesses and future...

We all just recently viewed an historic CNN holographic interview on an historic Election Night. CNN stated this type of imaging has never been done before on National TV and I believe that. I haven’t seen anything like it. The live interview caught me by surprise and sure had the “wow” factor attached to it didn’t it? Here’s a link to the actual interview.

CNN Hologram Video

The question now has to be asked. Is it Telepresence?

I’m no expert on the subject but I’m going to throw my hat into the ring, go out on a limb and say yes, I believe it is. Although I know many video conferencing purists are rolling their eyes and grabbing their guns right about now with my statement.

While I do know that Telepresence still hasn’t been universally defined (Houston, we have a problem), here’s how I see it…. Broken down to its simplest form - “tele” (through electronic means) and “presence” (present). This is how I’m justifying my opinion by lumping holography and Telepresence together. Just as Telepresence is surely an offshoot of video conferencing, holographic imaging (like we viewed on CNN) surely has to be considered an offshoot of Telepresence. The interviewer was “telepresent” from Chicago and beamed into the CNN Election Headquarters. She was most assuredly - “telepresent”. There was negligible latency, the imaging was fantastic and both interviewers were rehearsed on what they would say. I’ve just recently read that CNN actually “downgraded” the experience to make it “movie” quality and not as good as it could have been. Maybe they thought us mere mortals would be shocked if they showed their complete hand. I have a feeling it was so big to them, they didn’t want it to get upstaged by the historic election. I’m willing to bet we’ll see the “true” power of this technology in the upcoming weeks and months when they can put the pedal to the medal and show it off without having it sidetracked.

What an amazing time for this technology (all differences and opinions aside). Telepresence Doctors, nurses, teachers, schools and healthcare (healthpresence) will benefit from the recent gains in this state-of-the-art industry whether holograms, Telepresence or holography. Airlines also have to see the threat to a portion of their business travel. Hell, who wants go through security and fly to Miami for a two-hour conference when you can look them in the eye via Telepresence?

Beam me up Scotty! Simply amazing…!

Cleveland, Ohio (PRWEB) July 25, 2007 -- Quantum Systems Integrators, Inc., aka QuantumSI, completed a fully integrated deployment of its CROME performance management (PM) system for Ohio-based Revol Wireless. This system fully integrates and automates all PM aspects of a Nortel CDMA2000 Network into a comprehensive reporting and analysis framework. The CROME system is an invaluable tool which is actively contributing to Revol's ability to maintain and manage their actively growing network across six states (Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and New York) by providing full ad-hoc reports in mere seconds on any needed KPI or formula.

Meeting the large data volumes present in Revol's extensive network (approximately 4.5 Gbytes of raw data to process each day), CROME's server and multi-dimensional database architecture easily scaled handle the data and reporting requirements, while still maintaining CROME's high standards for speed and flexibility in reporting.

"QuantumSI's development agility has proven itself invaluable in consistently meeting our performance reporting needs." - Mark Glamm, Revol Wireless

QuantumSI's CROME product is a generic ad-hoc PM reporting tool that works seamlessly with disparate technologies such as CDMA, GSM, and iDEN. Regardless of the equipment vendor or data formats involved, CROME's data gateways integrate all data types into its generic reporting tool.

For this CDMA deployment, CROME data input gateways communicate with Revol's Nortel CDMA2000 1X, CDMA Packet Mobile Switching Center, for both performance metrics and configuration information, and also with the Nortel Base Station Subsystem Manager (BSSM), again for both performance metrics and configuration data.

The result is a fully automated data processing and high performance data warehouse that can quickly generate all needed ad-hoc reports against any of MobiPCS' performance data. Additional configuration data collected by CROME allows for use of CROME's interactive geographic mapping of any desired customer KPI or formula.

The CROME software suite is a best in its class decision support system that allows both land-line and wireless service providers to quickly analyze capacity, trends and faults for any network. This allows wireless providers to pro-actively tune, adjust, reassign, or increase capacity to meet exacting quality of service levels at the lowest possible equipment expenditure rate.

CROME is a proven solution that has been in operation for over nine years in full production settings, ideal for Network Optimization including: Network performance, Frequency and Capacity planning, Handoff parameter and System performance analysis, Capacity / Handoff / Drop / Block performance review (daily, period, or bouncing busy hour), and Drive Testing on Single Sites, Multi-Site Clusters, Switch Level, and Multi-Switch National Infrastructures.

Quantum Systems Integrators, located in Costa Mesa, California USA, has deployed its CROME vendor neutral performance management solutions (in iDEN, GSM or CDMA) solutions worldwide including the United States, South America, Asia, and the Middle East.
